Advantages of Screw Compressors

  1. High Reliability
    Screw compressors feature a simple structure with fewer components and no reciprocating wearing parts, resulting in reliable operation and long service life.
    The interval between major overhauls can reach 40,000–80,000 operating hours.

  2. Easy Operation and Maintenance
    With fewer moving parts and a compact design, screw compressors are easy to operate, inspect, and maintain, reducing downtime and maintenance costs.

  3. Excellent Power Balance
    Screw compressors have smooth, continuous rotary motion, resulting in good dynamic balance.
    This makes them especially suitable for mobile compressor applications, offering compact size, light weight, and minimal installation space requirements.

  4. Strong Adaptability
    Screw compressors operate using positive displacement with forced air delivery.
    Their volume flow rate is almost unaffected by discharge pressure, allowing them to maintain high efficiency over a wide operating range.
    They can handle various working media without requiring structural modifications.

  5. Capability for Multiphase Flow
    Due to the clearance between the rotor tooth surfaces, screw compressors can tolerate liquid impact and are capable of handling:

    • Gas–liquid mixtures

    • Dust-laden gases

    • Easily polymerizing gases


Disadvantages of Screw Compressors

  1. High Manufacturing Cost
    The rotor tooth profile is a complex three-dimensional curved surface that requires high-precision machining using specialized equipment and tools.
    In addition, the compressor casing also demands high machining accuracy, contributing to higher production costs.

  2. Limited to Medium and Low Pressure Applications
    Due to limitations in rotor strength and bearing life, screw compressors are generally used in medium- and low-pressure applications.
    The typical maximum discharge pressure does not exceed 3 MPa.

  3. Not Suitable for Very Small Capacity Applications
    Screw compressors rely on clearance sealing.
    As a result, their performance is optimal only when the volume flow rate exceeds approximately 0.2 m³/min, making them unsuitable for micro-flow applications.


Development and Application Background

Screw compressors, also known as rotary screw compressors, gained widespread adoption in the 1950s, particularly in refrigeration systems with the introduction of oil-injected screw compressors.

Thanks to their:

  • Simple structure

  • Minimal wear parts

  • Low discharge temperature under high pressure ratios

  • High oil content in the working medium (often referred to as wet compression)

They are insensitive to operating condition changes and provide excellent airflow regulation.
As a result, screw compressors rapidly replaced large-capacity reciprocating compressors in many industrial applications.
